Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) radically transforms contemporary industry, but unlocking its significant value is challenging and cumbersome. The emergence of the new technology is creating new skills gaps, shortages and mismatches, especially for micro companies and SMEs, which are in inferior position compared to large enterprises in manufacturing sector to attract and retain the scarce digital talents. The European Commission has just funded a new Erasmus+ KA3 project aimed at creating a VET Network with a certification scheme for professionals, being IIoT developers or users or sales workers, and training them to adapt and adopt a new common framework of best practices of the modern IIoT know-how in order to be able to combine effectively the knowledge and fundamental principles from various areas of expertise of cutting-edge technologies in the IIoT sector and gain a competitive advantage in their carrier path.

The following article highlights a few of the examples of how some of the Slovenian companies are tackling challenges of digitalisation in their production processes. These challenges can be seen in today’s products. Based on the data acquired from the European commission there have been 15 propositions proposed for digitalisation of the industry in the last years and 7 are still in the preparation phase. However, statistics show that European SMEs are lacking in the level of digitalisation compared to big companies that are relatively well digitalized. "Is everyone online?" For seven weeks, 28 fourth-year computer science students worked on their design skills in the minor User Experience Design (UXD). In the last four weeks, three of the seven groups focused on the user interface of advanced, smart machines. These assignments were submitted by companies HGG, JASA and JOZ, three machine builders in North Holland who are affiliated with the Smart Industry project TechValley. During the kick-off on 2 March, who would have thought that the students would present their results from their own student rooms, because of the corona outbreak?

In January 2020, we have launched our new project on virtual, augmented and mixed realities, called VAMR*s. It is a project on "University business cooperation to promote virtual, augmented and mixed reality applications in small and medium-sized manufacturing companies." We are very excited to be launching the first EU-wide survey that aims to gather information about SMEs and their relationship with VAM realities. With the first international Smart Engineering conference at the FHM Bielefeld campus, which dealt with data evaluation in manufacturing companies and an intelligent design of the product life cycle, the Fachhochschule des Mittelstands (FHM) and its international partners officially concluded the project "Knowledge Alliance for Upskilling Europe's SMEs to Meet the Challenges of Smart Engineering". Altogether about 80 participants from eight countries took part in the conference.

Industry Day 2019

FVEM organized the second edition of the Industry Day. An event in which FVEM brought the industrial reality closer to the professionals of the future, young students of technological branches of first of high school and first professional training courses.

Around 1,000 students of 23 educational centres all over the country visited 33 industrial companies simultaneously on 6th November.

They got to know the reality of these companies, their technologies, production processes, their innovative capacity, job profiles, etc. In these visits they were able to get to know first-hand what the Industry of Bizkaia is like.
